PDO Threads: All Your Questions Answered

PDO Threads are one of the latest advancements in the medi-aesthetic industry, offering firming and lifting benefits without the need for surgery. This highly effective treatment offers advanced yet natural results for clients concerned with sagging, wrinkles and other age-related concerns.

Today we will explain how they work and what to expect during your treatment.

What are PDO Threads?

PDO Threads are a TGA approved aesthetic treatment that is relatively new in Australia. Threads have been successfully used overseas for many years as a non-surgical alternative for skin lifting and tightening.

These threads are made from a material called Polydioxanone. It is naturally occurring and will be metabolised by the body after 6-12 months.

What are the benefits?

This treatment is suitable for most age related concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, skin sagging, and loss of volume.

During your treatment, the threads are inserted into the subdermal layer of skin, in a mesh-like pattern, promoting the creation of new collagen. The threads activate collagen synthesis which produces a gradual skin thickening, skin tightening and rejuvenation effect.

Where can they be used?

One of the great things about this treatment is it can be used across many areas of the face, neck and body, including:

  • Upper and lower cheeks

  • Forehead and brows

  • Neck and jawline

  • Nose to mouth lines

  • Marionette lines

  • Arms

  • Buttocks

  • Abdomen

How long does it take to see results?

You will begin to see results after 6 weeks which continue to improve over the next 2 to 6 months as new collagen is produced. Although the PDO Threads will slowly dissolve you will continue to see results for up to 12 months.

How many treatments will I need?

Generally, we recommend most clients have two treatments, approximately 6 weeks apart for best results. To maintain results, 6 monthly treatments are usually recommended.

Do PDO Threads hurt?

A topical anaesthetic will be applied before the treatment to minimise discomfort. The needle used during this treatment is so fine it will not cause any pain. You may just feel a tugging sensation as the treatment is performed.

Your skin may feel firm and tender for the days following.

Is there any downtime?

During the procedure, the skin is punctured in order to introduce the threads into the skin. This can cause slight swelling and bruising in the treatment area. This can take up to two weeks to resolve. Light makeup can be used on the treatment area the day after the procedure.

Is there anyone who can’t have the treatment?

PDO Threads are not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

We also recommend clients avoid taking blood thinning medications and alcohol for 3 days before treatment to minimise the risk of bruising.

Can I combine PDO Threads with other treatments?

Yes! PDO Threads can be used alongside Dermal Filler and Anti-Wrinkle injections to create a comprehensive treatment plan. There is no restriction on the time between treatments.
